WARNING: This is an advanced project that will require the use of hot UTEE and a heat gun. This is NOT suggested for children and all caution must be used when using any hot objects.  Please be careful and don’t burn yourself.  This stuff can hurt as bad as hot glue or hot PC straight from the oven. This tutorial is not endorsed by Puffinalia nor Suze Weinberg and there products are being shown in an informational setting and are not meant as an advertisement. I cannot take responsibility for injury or frustration caused by this tutorial.  All that aside I am very excited and pleased to share this with you!!!

This is what we are making: FAUX Amber!!!!

Materials List:

Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (Clear)

Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (Black)

(You can also use dirt ash or any other natural substance instead of the UTEE Black)

Glue Pot for melting enamel

Heat gun

Permanent ink (I use To Dye For by Suze Weinberg)

Needle tool

Modeling compound must be a two part compound using clay will not work as the enamel will melt into it and not release.  Puffinalia compound or Gedeo from Suze Weinberg will work

Wax paper

Small plastic bag

Hammer or pliers

Faux gemstones:

Making the crystals:

  1. Heat a good amount of the UTEE Clear in the pot.  As it melts you will see bubbles form in the UTEE, use a heat gun to remove them.
  2. Once the enamel is fully melted add orange yellow and red inks to taste. If trying to get amber I find using all but the yellow sparingly works. Mix in color it will bubble so use the heat gun again to smooth it out.
  3. Once the color is to your liking pour a thin layer of it onto a piece of wax paper.  It is very hot so be careful.
  4. Once the layer has dried peel it off the wax paper and place it into a plastic bag.
  5. Smash the bag with a hammer or use pliers to crush the UTEE in little shards.
  6. You now have crystal inclusions for your gems!!!( See Above photo)

Making the mold:

  1. Take your mold compound and cover a small or medium sized polished rock leave enough room for the UTEE to be poured in.
  2. Let set and remove stone.
  3. Set mold aside (See Above photo)

Making the Amber:

  1. Again heat and color the UTEE into the glue pot.
  2. Add your black inclusions i.e. Black UTEE, Dirt, Ash.  Mix lightly
  3. Pour into mold filling it up about ¾ way full
  4. Take the smashed crystal inclusions (see above) and using the needle tool mush them into the back of the mold.  You must do this quickly as the UTEE will set very fast.
  5. Quickly pour a little UTEE into the mold to fill it up
  6. Insert your needle tool into the back of the mold and wait about 30 seconds to pull the UTEE out of mold.

  1. At this point it will look pretty bad (See Above)
  2. Using the Heat gun gently mold the UTEE into a natural shape.  This is the most difficult part and will require some practice.  Keep moving the heat gun around holding it far enough away as not to burn your fingers or the UTEE 4-6 inches. You will have to play around with this.

  1. Remove stone from needle tool once cool and use as you like.  To put a hole in the stone heat the end of your needle tool and insert it into the stone. Do not press hard or you may break the stone or hurt yourself. When the resistance gets to much remove the tool and heat it again repeating the process until the tool exits the opposite side of the stone.
